Hey guys, my name is Natalie, and I’m going to tell you about a story that changed my life. First of all, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I’m a senior at River Valley High School. My best friends are Stephanie and Kelli. I live with my parents and my twenty three year old brother Josh. I have a boyfriend named Billy. He is so sweet, and we are planning to go to the same college together. My friends and I are planning to go to prom with a big group.
When all the kids met up, Kelli drove to the school. Natalie and Billy started to dance and when it was over Billy said, “Do you want to eat something before we start dancing again?” Stephanie said, “Sure let eat something.” Natalie was tired so the kids all left to take her home. It seemed like such a long drive from the school to her house. Once Natalie was home safe the rest of the kids left. They took the highway back to the school.
Before anybody knew what was happening, They were all hit by an oncoming truck. The truck smashed the driver side of the car. Stephanie was terribly injured. At 3:30 in the morning, my cell phone rang. I answered it. “Hello?”“Natalie, this is Stephanie’s mom Tara.” “Hey Tara, how are you?” I asked. “Not so good”, she answered in a scared voice. “Is something wrong?” She was quiet but then replied, “Yes something is very wrong.”“What is it?” I asked concerned.“Stephanie has not come home yet, and I’m very worried. I called the rest of her friends parents too, and they said their kids have not come back from prom either.”
“ They said they were going to get something to eat. They dropped me off at home because I was tired,” I answered in a shaky voice. “Well I’m very worried. I need your help to find them.” Tara said.“Well that could be a big problem,” I answered in a sad tone.Tara replied, “Um why?” “Because they left their cellphones at home.”
Tara was silent for a while.“Do you know where they all might be?” Tara asked.I was trying to think. I thought about the restaurant they were all talking about. “They might be at the new restaurant down main street.”“Then Tara said “May I call you back, someone else is calling me.”I replied, “Sure, let me know if you hear anything.”Tara said “Thank you, Bye!” “Bye”, I replied.
I was so frightened. I was worried about them all. Thoughts were running through my mind telling me things that made me even more scared. I was waiting for Tara to call back and tell me that she had heard something. I had heard someone coming up the stairs. It was my mom. She darted into my room. She looked scared. “I’m so glad you’re dressed”, she said. “We need to go to the hospital now!”I was quiet the whole ride to the hospital. I had so many questions to ask. Like, why were we going to the hospital? Or, whose at the hospital that we need to see. When we pulled up in the parking lot, There were little amount of cars. It was dim and foggy.
A police officer came out and took my mom and I inside. I still decided not to say anything.“ “Are you Natalie Brooks?” he asked.“Yes, and who are you?” I replied Before answering my question, he simply asked my mother and I to follow him. He lead us to a small pastel colored waiting room where all my friends were waiting. “What’s going on? I asked as I hugged Billy. Everybody was quiet. nobody wanted to talk. Billy started speaking when the police officer interrupted. “Your friends were all in an accident. Stephanie was terribly injured.” I began to choke up. I could feel the tears trying to come. I held them back for as long as I could. They started gushing out of my eyes. My mother hugged me and asked if they knew who had hit them. “Your son, Josh. He was very drunk and slid out of control.” The police officer stood in his spot watching my mother’s reaction.
“Where is he?” I was so mad at him, also very worried about how he was doing.“The doctor’s have not told us anything about him.” The police officer asked if we had any more questions. I then quickly asked without thinking, “Where’s Stephanie?” “Your friend is going to be alright. She has some brain damage, a collapsed lung, and a few broken ribs.” The doctor said walking up to us.I stood there. Tears rushing down my cheek. I could feel my heart beating, and my eyes swelling. “Your brother is awake also, he has a broken elbow, and two broken ribs,” “Where is he?”, I asked while my eyes darting from room to room.“In room number three down the hall”, he answered.
I went with my mom, to his room. We knocked on the door. “Come in”, a nurse answered. We opened to door, and I saw Josh getting a blood drawn. His room was so dark. I quickly asked him in a very angry and serious tone, “Why? Why did you get in that car? Why didn’t you call mom or dad? You realize that you almost killed my friends right? You could have even hurt me!” “Natalie, your brother is in a lot of pain also. I’m sure he knows he has done very wrong. There is no need to yell at him in public!” My mom was getting angry. I started yelling, “Mom, this was supposed to be one of the most wonderful nights of my life, and he ruins it as he always does. Josh how could you do this to me?” I stormed out of the room and went straight towards the reception desk.
“Can you tell me what room Stephanie Taylor is in?“Sorry, I’m not allowed to give out that kind of information.Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Tara. “Tara!” I ran over to her. “I can’t find out what room Stephanie is in, and nobody will tell me.” “Come with me I know where she is”. Tara led me to a elevator. “She is in room eleven b on the third floor. She has been asking about you.”“Thank you” I said with tears running down my face.I hugged her and went into the elevator.
It was a little brisk in there. It felt like it took forever to get to the third floor. As soon as the doors opened I ran down the halls until I saw room 11B. I was just about to walk in when a very gorgeous blonde nurse walked out. “Hello, Can I help you with something?”“Hi is this Stephanie Taylor’s room?“Nat? Is that you?” a small voice asked. The nurse moved aside as I ran to her hospital bed. When I saw her I broke down into tears. She had an IV in her arm, and a purple cast in a white sling. As I hugged her, she pointed to a small whiteboard on a table beside her. I handed it to her along with a blue marker. She wrote, “How is everyone?” I answered, “They are good. You got hurt the most.” She wrote down “Yeah, they wanted me to drive since I did really good on my drivers test.
“Typical,” I replied. She smiled. She wrote down “Well you better go, I have to get some rest. You need some too, because you didn’t get any sleep Friday night. I answered “Yeah I better leave, I’ll come Monday after school with sharpies.”She smiled and wrote “Good now come give me a hug.” I hugged her, and told her goodbye. I told the nurse Thank you, and hugged her too. I left the room with a smile on my face.
Three weeks later it was graduation. Stephanie was released from the hospital one week later. Stephanie, Kelli, and I got a twenty five thousand dollar scholarship for the highest grades. But what seemed to be a happy ending, turned out to be a tragic ending. On Stephanie’s birthday June 5th, I got a call from Tara saying that Stephanie had passed away at the hospital. She had a stroke, and passed away. After that phone call, I felt like my world ended. The next day Josh was arrested for drunk driving, and murder. We also found out that Josh had murdered a missing eight year old. We were all in shock. Josh had been sentenced to life in prison. One month after Stephanie’s funeral ,Billy, Kelli, Mark, Travis, and I went to our dream college without our best friend.
