<i>25 years in the past,</i> King Minos of Crete sent his son Androgeus to compete in Pan-Athenian games. Being an exceptional athlete, Androgeus won many of the events and the other competitors resented him. Androgeus was murdered before he could ever return to Crete. Four years later, King Minos demanded that 14 Athenians youths, seven male and seven females, be sent as sacrifices to Crete every seven years.
