First Crusade

Andrew Mauro

It is the year 1096. You are one of the many sons of a rich lord who rules over a large portion of land in France. Life is dull, you haven’t had much to do in your life besides train to fight. Your father had one of his knights train you to fight on horseback, so that you and your brothers may have the opportunity to protect the town your family rules over. But, you have never had to use your knowledge of combat. Instead, you live a peaceful life with no problems and no conflicts. It is incredibly boring for you. One faithful day a messenger meets with your father. If there’s one thing that you have been doing, it is the faithful worship of god. You pray to gain salvation in heaven, and you go to church to listen to the local Bishop read the bible. You are glad you have been given such a peaceful life, because it means that you have not been given the opportunity to do much sin. But you know that you have subconsciously hoping to be able to do something a little exciting. After your father finishes meeting with the messenger, he comes to you. He explains what news the messenger just brought him. He says that too many muslims have been invading the east, and are threatening the church there. Hugh I, Count of Vermandois, brother of King Philip I of France is gathering an army for a crusade. You get excited, this is what you have been waiting for. An opportunity to use your skills against a true evil. Islam. Also god apparently doesn’t care about what you do during it. You and your father along with your 3 brothers prepare with 15 knights to join a holy army for a crusade.
