After Jonathan checks up on the sprouting potatoes’ progress he heads into his house, where he notices his father, James abusing Aneles whom is their slave. James sexually harassed Aneles three months ago, meaning he shows more distaste towards her, because he doesn’t want her to ruin his powerful appearance. He vigorously roared in her ears as he said, “You FOOLISH, useless slave! These dishes are not clean. Rewash every single plate, fork, spoon, knife, ALL OF IT!” Aneles just nods and whimpers, trying to hold back her tears. The echo of his pounding voice made if feel as if her ears were going to bleed. She had always wanted to go to the north, she had heard that they were free and didn’t have to obey anyone. Abraham Lincoln had already given his speech of the Emancipation Proclamation and had given all slaves something they haven’t had for a while, hope. He said, “And by virtue of the power, and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free.” Hope to be free and live like all others, take my children to school without being threatened because the color of their skin.
