Groundhogs Day
Brennan Berryhill
The day was all in all pretty average. You were on a expedition in the middle east with a few of your other archaeologist friends. A couple soldiers accompanied you as security. The only thing of interest was a small, ancient rune that you discovered. Your team carefully and delicately brushed off the dirt and rubble off of it with little brushes. Then you carefully sealed it into a waterproof, protective bag. Before it was completely wrapped up your hand accidentally slipped and brushed the edge of the rune. Your hand instantly recoiled because of two things. Your archaeological instincts told you that you could have messed the ancient artifact up and it was also very cold. The rune seemed to glow a bit but none of your teammates seemed to have seen it so you breathed a sigh of relief and moved on. On the drive to your temporary shelter, the person sitting next to you tapped you on the shoulder and said, "Hey did you see what that rune said?" You shook your head no. "It was really interesting, using my minimal knowledge of the language, I was able to roughly translate it into this: 'Whoever touches this stone will relive the day that they made that fateful mistake.' Pretty eerie huh?" The thought of that made you shiver, but you knew better than to believe that mumbo jumbo. However, you still slept fretfully that night, and your dreams were ominous. You kept hearing a voice in your head saying, complete the tasks, it is your only escape. When you finally woke up in the morning, you were relieved to have escaped the dreams of your sleep. You quickly opened up your laptop to check the time. It was 6:30 A.M. but oddly, it said June 25th, which was yesterdays date. You kept remembering what the rune said and your ominous dreams but you quickly shook those thoughts off. Your laptop was probably just behind. You decide to take it to Bart, the technology junkie to get it fixed. When you reached his tent, you saw him already up walking around. You duck inside the flap and quickly explain your dilemma with the laptop. Bart just looked at you with a confused glance, "it is June 25th, yesterday was June 24th remember?" You shook your head, "no, no, no, yesterday was June 25th and we found the strange rune, right?" Bart just shook his head again, "you must be confused man, it is June 25th." The words of the rune hit you like a hammer, it was June 25th. You were stuck here until you did what your dreams told you, complete the tasks. What do you do first?
