Faith, War, and Demons
Derrick Lee
You might think this story you're reading is just some jumble fiction that any kid would read, but trust me, it's not what you think. My name? Nathian. I'm not going to tell you my last name because...well...it's a long story. Very long. It all started when I was just being a regular middle-schooler. That's right. High school. The school where you have to take six to eight classes per day, feeling like days than hours. The school where bullies and jocks punch you so much, you'll always see it coming. Basically, it's prison in a nutshell. The school that I go to is (wait for it) called Toughston High School. Sounds weird, right? Because "Tough" is in "Toughston"? Corny. I know. Either way, the name of the school itself gave me chills as soon as I HEARD OF IT. Afterwards, when you get used to it, middle school's not so much of a nightmare. At least, thank God, my bro, Darrius, is around. You gotta have friends if you want to survive in middle school. Otherwise, you're pretty much DOOMED. Darrius is a pretty good friend to have around. Yet, most of the time, he's not around me that often, since he's got others to worry about. Not to be specific. Either way, I still forgive him, though. Anyways, I'm a pretty good person when it comes to sports ( even though I get hurt a lot ). It's a hobby of mine. I like to be an outdoorsman. Mostly, on weekends, when I'm bored, I usually get my metal detector that my grandfather gave to me, and head out to the shoreline. Me and my grandfather would walk for hours. That is, until he...left. He said before goes away that he'll give me the detector because "he feels that there will be a purpose to it." I never knew what is was. Soon, I'd figure it out. Real soon. It still kept me thinking, though. What would a 16-year-old do with a metal detector? Maybe find some money, some scraps, or old Campbell's soup cans. That's usually what me and my grandfather would find, anyway. Hopefully, I could find something different. Boy, was I right. It was Saturday, and I asked Mom if I can go to Old Grove Cemetery. "Why would you go there?" She asked. I told her, "I wanna go visit Grandpa. Just say hello." I was glad she understood why. I miss my grandfather. A lot. He was really there for me. He always watched my steps, almost as if it was he only job. So, before I left, my mom gave a warning that I should've been smart about long ago. "Now Nathian," she said. ",they said there was some tough weather coming soon. Promise to come straight home after you had your visit, ok?" I nodded answered "Okay." I took my grandfather's metal detector with me. Something told me I might find some good once I head down there.
I walked down to the old, and gritty cemetery, and I was, like I said, old and gritty. I somewhat wasn't afraid. For I second I felt...comfortable. I turned on the metal detector so I can find some goodies lying around. Not saying I would steal from different graves. I'm too nice for that. I do belong to a Christian family, after all. Plus, hanging around in a cemetery with a metal detector is better than sitting around all day, and that I can't be wrong about. So I looked around the different graves, dug up some stuff around the graveyard, and found valuables like coins, and pictures, and jewelry. Then, the tears were about to come. I saw a polished diorite grave. It had some description carved in the stone. It said:
JONATHAN A. 1936-2019. A MAN OF KINDNESS, LOYALTY, AND FAITH, MADE EVERYDAY FOR HIS LIFE. ALWAYS AND FOREVER.
My grandfather. I never forgot that grave. Afterwards, the metal detector had picked up something that linked straight to my grandfather's grave. The metal detector was beeping like crazy! It's a good thing I brought my shovel with me. Maybe this grave is why Grandpa wanted me to keep the metal detector in the first place. I never been to his funeral, so I never saw what was in his coffin. So I got to digging, and sitting right beside the coffin was a big, glimmering gold box with amazing designs all around it. I opened it up, and a there was a golden sword right there with a glistening iron shield next to it. "WHOA! THAT IS AWESOME!!" I exclaimed, shocked by the epic sword shown to my very eyes. When I was about to grab it, it magically launched into my hand. " What the...?" I said, surprised by what the heck just happened. Underneath the sword and shield, there was a scrolled letter tied in a silver ribbon. I opened up the letter, and it said:
"Dear grandson, if you are reading this, then this means that you have found my sword and shield after I died with my old metal detector. I knew it meant good use for something. This sword and shield has been passed down for centuries and centuries by our grandest ancestors. Take care of it with all your might. It meant the universe to us. Love, Grandpa."
What did this mean? Who was the "us" that we're talking about. Why were there so many questions? Honestly...I had no idea. So I took the box, reburied Grandpa's grave and headed out the cemetery. I couldn't wait to get home, so can hide the box in my room for safekeeping. However, all of a sudden, a storm started rolling in the second I left. Kinda coincidental, if you think about it. I guess that was God telling me to hurry home. For some reason, though, the storm felt like as if it was pulling me in. The force become stronger than ever. I struggled and struggled, but it wouldn't work. Then, I saw it. Out from the sky, a wisp of golden dust fluttered around from behind me. The dust become larger, and larger, and larger. Swirling itself around into a vortex of mere destruction. A tornado. That great, big swirling funnel of wind. Powerful wind. Wind that was coming for me. "Must...get...home!" I grunted to myself. But, I couldn't make it any further. The tornado's velocity grabbed me from the ground, untill I was pulled into the eyeof the swirling vortex. I prayed to God that I make it out alive, and unharmed. Surprisingly enough, I didn't fall down. I went higher, and higher....high enough to get to the very heavens of God. LITERALLY! I saw all different kinds of things. Things that made me think the impossible. That I wasn't in Kansas anyone. That I was, indeed, in the kingdom of God.
My eyes stares with unbelief. One side. I saw a poorly ill soul get thrown into a dark, monstrous, and devilish hole with creepy, black demons that looks of evil. That hole could lead to the only place I can think of. The Underworld. Hell. The Devil's Kingdom. The place where man must face judgement for their sins in pain, forever in Satan's everlasting fires. You can know a lot when you're a Christian like me. On another side, where things looked a lot less hellish, I saw angels doing work EVERYWHERE! Wings flying and halos floating from miles ahead. I was sure that was God's kingdom, for sure. I couldn't believe it before my very eyes. As I started walking around the place, I noticed a enormously tall, golden gate, with tguards on every side of the gate, with wings, halos, and golden harps. You know, the usual angel get-up. Maybe the harp could be for important times only. Who knew? Definitely not me. I walked up to one the guards , and as soon as I did, both saw me and paused me right before I touched the heavenly gates. "Address your first and last name." ,they bellowed to me. I guessed in order for me to get passed these gates, they had to known if I'm "worthy" for it. Otherwise if I'm not, well...you know what happens. It's down the deep, dark hole I go. Yet when I told them my name, they somewhat bowed to me. Now, that's something that never happened to me before. "The Mighty Warrior has come.", whispered one the guards. "God Almighty has been expecting you, and now, you shall go to him." The big, strong, mean-looking guards of God's kingdom played not a horn, but a harp, to open the gates of heaven. How ironic. Anyways, the gate went open, and it was time for me to set my footsteps into the greatest land of all of the universe. It was time that I went to heaven.
When I saw people flying everywhere, I was shocked by the kinds of people I saw. Celebrities, presidents, historians. There was freaking Martin Luther King sitting on a bench next to Frederick Douglass! My mind had never been more blown away than this. Then, I noticed someone specific. A light-skinned old man. With a big, brown beard and curly hair like that, I knew that I knew him from somewhere. "GRANDPA!" I yelled. I was so excited to see him, I could just burst with joy! When Grandpa turned around and saw me, he had the same reaction. "Well, great to see you here, lad!" He exclaimed. "I see you got the message, eh, lad?" I guess showed him the golden sword that I found in his grave. He was glad I had it with me in his remembrance. "So, what brought you here, Nathian? Are you dead?" asked Grandpa. "A tornado circled around me." I answered. Grandpa looked at me very confused. After I told him what happened with the guards, his confusion flushed away with seriousness. "Come, Nathian. We don't have much time to waste." We he said that, he said that like he meant business. He grab my arm and ran. He ran as fast as he can, and he picked up just enough speed to thrust us in the air, and to fly like eagles in the sky. I felt brave about it. Sorta. Kinda. In way. Actually, no, I was very panicked because of what was happening blew was blowing my mind. I screamed forever, until eventually my grandfather snapped me out of it. My fear transformed into amazement. I felt like I was on a hot air balloon because of the amazing view the great heavens had to offer. It was the most amazing sight ever. When we stopped and landed, there was an incredibly huge, golden throne, sat by a man with a white robe. His face was unknown because he was so large, his face touched space.I couldn't see who it was, but I figured out very easily who this giant man was. It was God Almighty himself. In his deep and bellowed voice, he said, "Welcome to my kingdom. I am more than honored to have you here." I blushed as red as a ripe tomato. "I see you got inside of the tornado, Nathian. I know because I sent it specifically to you. It was the only way to get you here." Makes sense to me. God also told me something that meant the universe to me. The one thing that the whole universe depends on. He said, "You have been sent to heaven because you have chosen as the Mighty Warrior. The battle of Good versus Evil is rising among us, and we don't have much time. Our angels have been training with my son, Jesus, trying to get ready to fight against Satan's army of demons. With his right-hand, Zephius, by his side, they think they will win, but their thoughts are wrong." Okay, I know what you're thinking right now. "Since when did the Devil have a right-hand man?" I know, I know. Kinda weird, to be honest. Anyway, God continued, saying, "With you and your grandfather here working together, we're unstoppable. This war is for the sake of all balance within the universe, and I ask you this: do you accept the challenge, Nathian?" I really didn't have any options to think and make the right decision, because who else could say no to being the greatest warrior in the history of space and time. My response: "Where do I start?" God responded, "Your training will begin every morning at 6:00 a.m. at the training barracks." He pointed to a building that looked like the barracks I was going to train at. It was wooden, and had four glass panes on each horizontal side. "Nathian, as being God, I see things in people that will change their lives forever, but you, I see a hero.", God said. "A hero with bravery, courage, strength, and victory, and I promise you, in the battle of Good versus Evil, we will win this. I know we can. Like I said, I've see lots of things. That's why I chosen you." I felt like my heart was going to explode, because I never felt like this before. I mean, think about it. I was going to save the world from darkness and sin, and return balance within this saved universe. I was known as the Mighty Warrior. How much big of a job can this sound? This was the most important experience in my whole life. But what was my mom going to say? When I looked at God, he was given a scroll by one of the angels. By the reaction he had when he saw the scroll, he was shocked. He looked back down at me. "Nathian, I'm afraid I have some bad news. It's about your mother. It appears she has been kidnapped by the demons of Satan. He will only return her if we surrender to the war, but that will never happen. This is why I chose you, Nathian. Your mother, grandfather, and myself all trust in you on this war to return as victory. It's up to you to fix this. For now, I'll have to figure out about this situation with your mother and how to resolve it. The world is depending on you, Nathian. Tonight, you rest with your grandfather at his cabin. Then, you shall train tomorrow at the training barracks." I understood everything God had said, but hearing the fact that my mother was kidnapped by demons made me want to get the golden sword and cut Satan's head off like a madman. My life just changed from being an average, awkward 10th grader, to being the greatest warrior of all time. What could I do? Do as God told me and conquer this battle. It was my only chance to saving this universe from destruction ever again.
So me and my grandfather went to the cabin to rest for tomorrow's training, so I can be ready for the battle soon. "So much for a weekend, eh, lad?" asked Grandpa "Listen, Nathian. When I died, I knew I was going to heaven because clues from God had been sent to me." I thought for a while about the grave a few hours ago. I thought I saw light appear from the grave, which could have been 1; sunlight, or 2; Grandpa's spirit. I didn't know. It was something that I couldn't figure out. Grandpa then asked me afterwards if I saw any light from his grave. You should know I told him everything. He told me that was his signal being sent to God, letting him know that I was ready for "takeoff". I'm pretty sure I knew what that was. I was surprised by what he said, but how could I have saw...that? I asked him and he said, "You was the only person who saw me deep down to my spirit. You cared for me more than anything else in the world. So for that, I want to thank you for you caring for me." So we did what we always do before rest: showered, brushed teeth, read a Bible verse and prayed to God. Then after that, we finally went to sleep. I couldn't sleep nor blink after having the day I had. May God be with me though all of this. He should be.
On the next morning, Grandpa woke me up at the right time, so I won't be late: 3:30 A.M. How convenient. "WAKE UP, SLEEPY DWARF! WE GOT TO TRAIN!" As much as I wanted to stay asleep, I got up and got ready for training. I put on some armor that I got from Grandpa and I brought Grandpa's sword and shield with me. We walked me over to the training barracks, so we can begin prepping ourselves for the war. As soon as I went inside, it smelled like a boys locker room. I should've known a room filled with war-hungry angels of God would smell like Doritos and trash. Anyway, I got started with a few stretches, and got started on the hard stuff. First was warm-ups, second was exercise, then fencing, running track, and combat fighting. After all of that, I was tired as a sloth, and hot as a desert, and that was just the beginning. Afterwards, I we went back to the cabin and rested for a while. "Well done, Nathian." Said Grandpa. He was by my side the whole time, just in case of help. Meanwhile, one of the angels sent us a message saying that God wants to meet with us again. So I held on to Grandpa's back as he was flying to God's throne, this time without panicking and screaming so loud that literally the heavens can hear me. "I've heard of great progress from you at training today. Well done. Soon, you'll be able to have earned your own wings and halo, just like your grandfather. Just keep up the progress, Nathian." Then, God had to break to us the bad news. "Satan is getting very impatient with the offer. If we cannot surrender to this war, your mother will unfortunately die. This is getting worser than expected. We must think of a possible solution" But I had an idea. "What if I went to talk to Satan?" I asked. God's responded, "No! That is an objective far too dangerous for you to handle. Satan is too cunning and mischievous for you to simply resolve this deal. He could crush you in his mighty bare hands in a instant!" He was right, but I felt to determined to make this right. "I can do this!" I exclaimed. God made his decision. "Fine. You may go, but if you don't survive, we'll be useless and we'll lose the battle for good. So Jonathan, go with Nathian to make sure he's safe." Then, by using his hands, God pulled open a portal in the air. "This shall be your portal to the Underworld. You have 12 hours. Go, go, go, now!" So Grandpa and I went in the portal and journeyed to the great and dark Underworld.
In the Underworld, darkness was everywhere. Black was everywhere. Dark red wss everywhere. Just dark. Chasms and caves echoed with mysterious noises that's even more scary than Goosebumps. As long as I had my gear, I was protected. At first, it was quiet, but than I saw a shadow. A shadow of a monster that I know that knights have fought in myths, and can breathe fire also. This monster also flew rapidly around Grandpa and I in circles and then landed. "Dragon." I whispered. The red-and-black, fire-breathing dragon stood furiously toward us. A lizard and a bird equaling to this monster. It roared furiously, so I stroked attack. I jumped as high as a spring and jumped on the dragon's back. But as soon as I did that, the dragon flew in the air like crazy. I tried to take control of it, but it was out of control. Then, an idea came in. I shouted at Grandpa, "I THINK THE DRAGON IS TAKING ME TO SATAN! GO TO HIS LAIR!" So Grandpa did exactly that. I thought if I used the horns to control the dragon, then I can get it to take me to Satan. I did the experiment, and it was a success. The dragon took me directly to Satan's lair. As I was traveling, I saw Grandpa running to Satan's lair. When he saw me, he shouted, "THAT'S MY BOY!" Then, we found Satan's lair in the Underworld.
The way to describe Satan is very demonic. His skin sheened the color of blood. His huge, bulky, muscular body had ears as sharp as an elf's, with a tail that was sharp as a scorpion's stinger, and teeth like a great white shark. His eyes were as dark as the souls who roamed his kingdom. He wore no shirt and the shorts' sleeves were ripped off a little. His hair was a flame-like style, with ram horns on top of his head. His voice was so so demonic and horrific, one word he says is trembles me. His right-head, Zephius, looked the same, except he's less taller, and wears a shirt that's ripped. His horns were less curved and sharpened, and he almost seemed a bit...human. In his powerful voice, Satan said, "Why have you come?" He asked. I answered, "We come to talk to you. About the the offer."
"Ah, yes. The trade. Have you decided to forfeit the war?"
"No! I had a different idea."
"What can it be?"
"You give back my mom, and then.....then... we'll.."
"Then what?"
"I'LL GIVE YOU MY ARMOR!" I closed my mouth. I didn't know what came out of me. "No! That's not what was I was going to say!"
"Then what is it?"
Then, an idea came. "If I fight Zephius, and I win, you let my mom go."
"And if not?"
"I will be held here for 100 centuries." "NATHIAN! DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE DONE?!" Yelled Grandpa. Then, Satan said, "It's a deal!" I don't know if I made the best decision, or the worse decision in my life. I have to do it, for the sake of Mom. Thank God I took wrestling class. I'm a very athletic person. So we began the fight. Zephius was pumped and ready for the fight. "
"Are going to fight, or what?" Said Zephius "Oh, yeah. It's go time!" I replied. We started and its seem like Zephius was going to win, but that's not going to happen. When Zephius was choking, I uppercut his face off. He couldn't even get up for five minutes. Then, when he got up, u kicked him in the crotch, then the face, after that, a double fist punch on the face, and finally, a kick in the stomach. "How you like me now?" I asked. I kicked Zephius' butt like crazy! Again, Grandpa said, "THAT'S MY BOY!" Now Satan must return the favor. "Did you realy think I would just give her to you?" Satan asked. Then, an idea came. I gave Grandpa the signal to get Mom for me while I distract Satan. I told Satan, "WHAT?! You was supposed to return her!"
"Well, I fooled you so I can see how you feel when your plans fail." said Satan
"I bet you couldn't let my mom out of that trap."
"Bet I can."
"Well, where is she?"
"She's right here of cour-NOOOOOO!" Then, I escaped from the lair. But we don't have enough time to get back home. We hurried and hurried when the portal was getting smaller. But we made it just in time. "YOU DID IT! BRAVO! BRAVO! CONGRATS, NATHIAN!" Yelled God " I can't believe it! You made it!" Grandpa and I went to the cabin to rest for night because today was not a good day. Mom was at home and so was us.
What we did yesterday was a terrible idea because today, things got worse. God was talking to Satan on a mirror. "THIS ENDS TODAY!" Yelled Satan "I'M TIRED OF BEING DEFEATED BY YOU AND YOUR PUNY ANGELS! THE WAR BEGINS TODAAAAYYY!" Then, he vanished. God looked worried as the war was going to start today. "Nathian." He said "BRING ME NATHIAN!" Then, an angel went to get us. Grandpa and I was getting ready. Grandpa put on his armor and I put on my armor. "Are you ready for this?" Grandpa. "I've been ready" I answered. We went outside for the fight as God needed us. "Nathian, you are about to make history in this world. As you get ready for this, Nathian, you must show your bravery on this battle. You have been a great hero, and you still are one. Good luck, and be safe." I took that advice and continued my battle of angels vs. demons. I saw the earth as chaos grew everywhere. Earth's end is here. As chaos grew, demons from the Underworld start coming in. I tried to squeezed though the crowd as God's angels and Satan's demons were in battle. Why? An idea came in. I found the portal the demons came from. I went inside to the Underworld so I can Satan a piece of my mind!
"SATAN! SATAN! YOU NEED TO STOP THIS!" I yelled out to Satan as I was running to lair . "NEVER! THIS WAR SHALL CONTINUE ON UNTIL EVIL WINS!" "BUT LOOK AT THIS!" I yelled. "I SAID NO!" Yelled Satan. His hand slapped me towards a wall. That...was...IT! Then as soon as i got furious, striving for action, a halo popped on top of my head and wings start coming out of my back. With a mighty jump, the sword went though Satan's head. After that, all of the demons disappeared into dust, then the chaos of the earth vanished, and finally, Earth is a good place to live again. All of the angels cheered and shouted as good won in the war of Good vs. Evil. God wanted to see me again for my bravery. "Congratulations, Nathian. You have succeed in being victorious in the Battle of Good vs. Evil. Your reward for you being heroic is becoming a full Angel." Everyone applauded for me, and I felt really proud and victorious. Grandpa was still saying...well... you-know-what. Now that the world is safe from sin, nothing can EVER go wrong.....OR CAN IT? Who knows. I'm just Nathian Angel, who saved the world.
