Cries of War

Nathaniel Stantus

I was so young when I joined the army, as I was only 18. Before the Great War I had such a happy life. I played football and I was number one in our area. I was top in my class in grades, and many people liked me. I was also was good at chess and history. My name is Jack and I was murdered by a soldier in this war. Mother, if you are reading this, I've been shot in war and have died. Every soldier gives a note to their officer or friends before they go into war to read to their family in case of death. Mother I am sorry I didn't meet you before I went to war. I figured that it wouldn't matter because you left us anyways, but it does. The reason I wanted you to get this letter was because dad died of a heart attack. I am sorry for choosing the path of the cries of men, the path of murder, and the path to hell as you will never forget the horror that happened. My friend John tried to convince my brother Phillip and I to join the war because we thought Kaiser Wilhelm II would lead Germany to win the war in 3 months. My friend Philip has already signed up when he convinced me to join. So that night when I was making dinner I asked my brother if he wanted to join the war with John and I.
Philip joins us.
Phillip stays home.
