The Ladder

You step into the office where your job interview is. A man sits behind a large desk. You know him to be the departmental head. His nameplate on the desk confirms this. He is the one you've been dealing with and he's worked hard to get you to this point. He obviously has high hopes for you, and if all goes well he will be your boss.
To his left sits a grumpy-looking elderly man. As you approach, the man behind the desk rises and extends his hand. At the same time the elderly man extends his hand without rising. Whose hand do you take?
