Divergent Lens
Sigmund Gusdorf
“So, you’re going to be a poet?” The big man chuckled as he handed me some files he needed shredding. I had just finished answering his question of what I was studying at college. It seems every time I tell someone I’m majoring in literature and philosophy I get the same response. An incredulous look comes over their face and usually I am met with a similar question to the one above.
Robert Frost’s famous poem states “I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” Many people think this means to go down the less traveled path means not doing what everyone else is. By taking the path less traveled, the speaker has lived a life that most people don’t get to experience. One that is perhaps more fulfilling and more original.
