Agamemnon

Aeschylus, Adapted by Ali Janavaris

You are Clytemnestra, queen of Argos, and your husband is Agamemnon, king of Argos. Agamemnon rules the kingdom of Argos. You have been home for ten years awaiting his return. But wait! What is that? A watchman sees that Troy has finally fallen! This news is soon carried to you by a god of fire, and this means that your husband will be home soon. The chorus then asks you if the message is true, and you reassure the chorus that it certainly is. On the surface it may seem that this is news to celebrate. However, you have been eagerly awaiting his return NOT because you so desperately miss him, but because you want to end his life! YOU HEARD RIGHT! He sacrificed your daughter, Iphigenia in order to appease the god, Artemis, and you seek revenge. His chariot has arrived. The chorus welcomes him home. What do YOU do?
See your husband in all his glory, and see Cassandra, (his mistresss), but don't care. You suddenly feel guilty for ever thinking that you would ever kill him, and fall at his feet.
See your husband in all his glory, and see Cassandra, (his mistress), and this angers you even more. You decide that nothing will deter you from accomplishing your original plan.
