Style's Inferno

Becky Sharpe

You stand in front of a large stone gate. The smell of brimstone and death eminates from the hot, bleak landscape around you. You look up to see, among the carved, concrete snakes winding around the doors, this inscription above. Notice how your eyes are drawn to the text: the image of the demonic skull and wings umbrellaing the caption 'ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER HERE'. The capitalization of the indented letters coupled with the smooth background of the stone stress the importance of these words. You know this to be called the design choice, emphasis (putting stress on a word or group of words to give them importance). Beyond the gates, you hear echoing screams of agony and despair. Your heart sinks into your stomach as you weigh your options.
Continue through the stone gates of hell.
Turn back now, before it's too late.
