The Dark Ones

The storm hit while you were driving through the middle of nowhere at night. Your headlights could barely pierce the gloom and you couldn't hear yourself think over the rain and thunder. You pray that you get to a town soon so you can find a place to wait out the storm. But those hopes are dashed when you have to slam on the breaks just before you hit a tree that had fallen in the road. You pull your coat's hood up and reluctantly climb out of your car to inspect the tree. It stretches across the entire road so there's no going around it. And it's far too heavy for you to move it.
You're pretty sure that the road the tree is blocking leads to a nearby town, but you'll have to walk to get there. You could drive back the way you came but the last town you saw was almost an hour away and you don't think your car has enough gas to make it back. You decide walking is your only option.
You stay on the road so you don't get lost.
You decide to take a shortcut by hiking through the  woods.
